Discipline 01 · Architectural Acoustics

Architectural acoustics and noise control engineering

IHD’s acoustic consultants shape how rooms sound and how buildings keep noise out — from performance venues and events halls to worship spaces, hotels and corporate offices across the Philippines.

Overview

Our Architectural Acoustics practice

Our acoustics consultancy covers architectural, environmental and industrial sound management. We design acoustic environments where speech is intelligible, music is clear and unwanted noise stays out — whether the room is a theater, a hotel ballroom, a church sanctuary or a boardroom.

From concert halls to corporate offices, the practice provides analysis, design and implementation guidance for sound quality and noise control, working closely with the architects, engineers and owners who shape the building.

Acoustics is engineered most effectively at design stage. Early involvement lets room geometry, finishes, partitions and building services be coordinated before they are built, rather than corrected after occupancy.

Technical Capabilities

Core specialisations

01Architectural acoustics
Room acoustics design for performance venues, theaters and conference facilities.
02Environmental noise
Assessment and mitigation of external noise impacts on a building and its surroundings.
03Mechanical system noise
HVAC and equipment noise control, coordinated with the building services design.
04Noise mitigation
Custom noise control solutions for residential and commercial projects.
05Acoustic surveys
Detailed field measurements and reporting of existing acoustic conditions.
06Sound system design
Integrated audio solutions designed together with the room’s acoustics.
07Forensic acoustics

Applications

Where this discipline is applied

  • Theaters and performance venues

Room acoustics that support both natural sound and amplified performance.

  • Events halls and ballrooms

Multi-use rooms that must suit conferences, launches and celebrations.

  • Churches and chapels

Speech intelligibility and music for worship, including chapels inside busy mixed-use complexes.

  • Hotels and resorts

Restaurants, rooftop venues, guest floors and amenities where noise shapes the guest experience.

  • Offices and conference facilities

Meeting room acoustics, speech privacy and building services noise.

  • Schools and auditoriums

Multipurpose halls used for academic programs, performances and community events.

Engineering Methodology

How we deliver

  1. 01

    Measure

Acoustic surveys and field measurements establish existing conditions and noise sources.

  2. 02

    Model

Simulation software predicts how spaces will perform and tests treatments before they are specified.

  3. 03

    Coordinate

Acoustic requirements are integrated with architectural and engineering design through construction.

  4. 04

    Verify

Verification testing confirms that acoustic performance meets or exceeds the design specification.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What does an acoustic consultant do?

An acoustic consultant designs how spaces sound and how a building controls noise. That covers room acoustics for theaters, halls and meeting rooms, sound insulation between spaces, control of HVAC and equipment noise, environmental noise assessment, and verification testing once the building is complete.

When should an acoustic consultant be involved in a project?

As early as possible — ideally at concept or schematic design. Room shapes, wall and floor build-ups, ceiling heights and plant locations are far cheaper to get right on drawings than to correct after construction or occupancy.

Can you fix acoustic problems in an existing building?

Yes. We start with an acoustic survey and field measurements to identify the source of the problem, then recommend targeted treatment or noise mitigation, and verify the result with follow-up testing.

Do you also design the sound system?

Yes. Sound system design is part of our acoustics practice and is coordinated with our audiovisual discipline, so loudspeakers, room acoustics and the wider AV system are designed together rather than separately.
